Electronic Design Services for Teams That Need to Own the Result

Our engineers join your project as an extension of your team. You own every schematic, every line of source code, and every PCB layout we produce.

Your engineering team is handling sustaining work—production support, bug fixes, and the maintenance tasks that keep revenue flowing. Meanwhile, the product roadmap is stacking up. New designs wait because there is no bandwidth to start them, and hiring takes months you do not have.

The Problem: Your Team Is at Capacity

When Your Engineers Are Swamped, New Products Stall

Your engineering team is handling sustaining work—production support, bug fixes, and the maintenance tasks that keep revenue flowing. Meanwhile, the product roadmap is stacking up. New designs wait because there is no bandwidth to start them, and hiring takes months you do not have.

This is the situation where an electronic design consultant provides the most value: not replacing your team, but extending its capacity. Our engineers handle the new project while yours keep production stable. We work from your specifications, use your preferred tools and processes, and deliver work product that integrates into your existing systems.

If your company has outgrown its original engineering capacity—whether that was a founding engineer, a small team, or a single-discipline group—we provide the depth to handle multi-board designs, mixed-signal circuits, embedded firmware, and compliance testing simultaneously. The engagement scales to your project, not to a permanent increase in headcount.

  • Engineer consult + scope (SOW proposal, NDA as needed)
  • Assessment + execution (requirements, risks, build, reviews, test strategy)
  • Testing + production transfer (cert support, repo/source transfer, sustainment)

How We Work: An Extension of Your Team

An Electronics Design Company Built to Extend Your Capabilities

Most electronics design firms describe themselves with capability lists. We operate differently. When you engage DE Design Works, you get direct access to the engineers doing the work—not project managers relaying information through layers of process.

Our engagement model addresses two persistent concerns we hear from engineering managers evaluating firms:

  • Capability gaps: if your team needs firmware expertise (embedded C, Linux BSPs, RTOS), RF integration, power electronics, or IoT connectivity that you do not have in-house, our engineers bring those specific skills without the overhead of a full-time hire.

  • IP ownership: every schematic, every line of source code, every PCB layout file we produce belongs to you. We do not retain rights, create dependency, or require ongoing licensing. When the project concludes, you have complete documentation and full ownership of the work product.

Billing is transparent and project-scoped. We provide detailed statements so you can track hours against deliverables. No hidden fees, no scope ambiguity.

From Custom Electronic Design to Production

Custom Electronic Design Through Every Stage of Development

Product development typically moves through defined stages, and we provide engineering support at every one of them. The process begins with a discovery assessment where we evaluate your requirements, identify technical risks, and scope the project before committing resources.

From there, our team handles concept development and proof-of-concept prototyping, circuit design and PCB schematic capture, PCB layout and design-for-manufacturing review, board-level firmware and application software development, quick-turn prototype builds and functional testing, pre-certification and compliance testing support, and production transfer consulting including BOM optimization and manufacturing partner coordination.

Each stage produces documented deliverables you review and approve. The process is iterative by design—we build, test, refine, and advance based on real performance data rather than assumptions. Projects range from single-board embedded controllers to multi-board systems with wireless connectivity, custom sensor integration, and industrial communication protocols.

Key Questions to Consider

Who owns the final design files and source code?

The Strategic Risk: Many firms use proprietary libraries or "black box" firmware modules that lock you into their ecosystem. If you want to move to a different manufacturer or bring the project back in-house, you are held hostage by licensing fees.

The DEDW Answer: At DE Design Works, you own 100% of the work product. Upon project completion, we deliver all Altium/PCB design files, firmware source code, BOMs, and schematics. Your IP is your asset, not our leverage.

Is the engineering work performed in the US or offshored?

The Strategic Risk: Offshoring introduces time-zone friction, communication lag, and significant IP protection risks. For defense-adjacent or highly regulated industries, "US-based" isn't just a preference—it’s often a compliance requirement.

The DEDW Answer: We are 100% US-based. Our team of 20+ engineers works out of our St. Louis headquarters. This ensures real-time collaboration with your team and the highest level of security for your proprietary designs.

How do you handle "Scope Creep" and shifting project requirements?

The Strategic Risk: In custom electronic design, "the napkin sketch" often evolves as stakeholders see the first prototype. Rigid, opaque billing models can lead to budget blowouts when requirements shift.

The DEDW Answer: We operate with a transparent consulting model. We provide detailed assessments upfront and maintain a collaborative feedback loop. Because we act as an extension of your team, we adapt to your changing R&D needs while providing clear visibility into how those changes impact the production timeline.

Can you take a design from prototype through to full production?

The Strategic Risk: Many "design-only" shops produce files that are beautiful on screen but a nightmare for high-volume manufacturing (DFM).

The DEDW Answer: Since 2002, we’ve specialized in production-ready engineering. We don’t just design for a lab environment; we design for the real world. This includes managing compliance testing (FCC, CE, UL), sourcing components with long lifecycles, and facilitating the hand-off to your CM or our trusted manufacturing partners.

My internal team is swamped—how much of their time will this take?
  • The Strategic Risk: Managers fear that "outsourcing" will actually create more work for their senior staff in the form of constant "babysitting" and technical hand-holding.

  • The DEDW Answer: Our electronic design consultants are senior-level experts. Once we establish the project requirements and communication cadence, we operate autonomously. We provide the "heavy lifting" engineering capacity you lack, providing regular status updates that give you control without the micromanagement.
